The art movement that defined nonsense! Dada emerged in the early 20th century as a response to the horrors of World War I. The Dadaists believed that if life had become chaotic and meaningless, then art should reflect that insanity. First sprouting in neutral Zurich and avant-garde New York, the movement quickly spread to Berlin and Paris, where it blossomed into an international rebellion.
Founded by writers Hugo Ball and Tristan Tzara, Dada soon attracted artists like Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, who embraced randomness and spontaneity, producing collages, readymades, and performances that left audiences scratching their heads.
Fleeing to New York to escape the war, Duchamp didn’t just change his own address, he also took Dada to new and rather unexpected places. In 1917, he famously submitted an urinal titled Fountain to an art exhibition, taking toilet humor to a whole new level. The piece was rejected, of course, but it flushed away conventional ideas of what art could be.

And Fountain didn’t just shake things up in its own time—it continues to inspire artists to this day. Duchamp’s bold move paved the way for conceptual art. Take Maurizio Cattelan’s America (2016), a fully functional, 18-karat gold toilet. Installed at the Guggenheim Museum, it was a satirical take on excessive wealth and, presumably, a political statement. And in true Dada fashion, reality outdid the absurd when America was later stolen from an exhibition in Blenheim Palace, England. When you gotta go, you gotta go… and sometimes, you take the toilet with you.
The Dada movement may not have made much sense, but it certainly made waves. So next time you encounter something that looks like a bunch of nonsense in your life, just remember: it might just be Dada at its finest!
