While the dictionary gives us a good start, figuring out what truly qualifies as art is like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded. Art is "a visual object or an experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination." Sounds fancy, but it doesn’t quite explain why a banana taped to a wall sold for $6.2 million in November 2024. Classic art like paintings and sculptures fit this definition nicely, but then came Marcel Duchamp, who put a urinal in a gallery and called it "Fountain." It reminds me of Sotheby’s NFT auction where millions were spent in seconds, only for values to hit zero later. Is that really art or just hype? Duchamp’s Fountain had a point to make, but do monkey NFTs or the taped banana even try?
